A night vision rifle scope may also be called night vision sights or night vision scopes. The night vision weapon is a mountable apparatus that aids in aiming the rifle. This is an advantage for law officers such as swat teams, military and those who hunt their prey at night. Since they are not illegal for the consumer to own, the next question would be are they illegal for a consumer to use?

How Are Night Vision Scopes Used With Rifles?
The most affordable night vision scope retails for about $375.00. It is just over a foot long and is about four inches high and three inches wide. The scope weighs only about two pounds. The sight attaches to the rifle using a standard weaver rail system.
This is the mounting rail that is used to attach the scope to the rifle. The rail has a set of raised points and a T shaped cross section which has flat openings called spacing slots. The scopes are attached by sliding them onto the cross section from either end using a ‘rail grabber.’ This is attached to the rail using levers, screws or bolts.
There are other types of systems for attaching the night scopes to the rifles. One is the picatinny rail which is quite similar to the weaver rail system except for the size of the slots.
Generations of Night Scopes
There are ‘generations’ of night scopes that use different types of light. They are explained by the following:
“The Generation 1 uses an ambient light instead of an infrared light source.” This type uses moonlight in order to work correctly.
The Generation 2 uses an “image-intensifier tube utilizing micro-channel plate” and increases the light in the immediate area. This is handy for nights when there is no moon.
Generation 3 uses a similar micro-channel plate but has “a photocathode made with gallium arsenide.” This increases the image and the light magnification has also been improved. So the generation you use will depend upon how well you need to see and whether the moon is on the night in question.
Differences Between a Dedicated Night and Dedicated Day Scope?
Rifle scopes that only work in the daylight are dedicated day scopes. The one that works only at night and will not work in the daylight are night dedicated scopes.
Some night vision scopes are using technology that has been around for over 30 years. One such type depends on an I light gathering tube. If this is too old for your needs and you want something more now you will pay for the technology. Try about $4,000 to $6,000 worth of technology.
What is a Day/Night Scope?
American Technologies Network, Corporation acknowledged that law enforcement officers and those who serve in the military needed a day/night scope that would work with riflescopes, hand-held units and spotting scopes.
Day Night Rifle Scope
This led to the development of the PS22 night vision scope. This is a scope that mounts right in front of your day scope and there is no need to make adjustments. It does not use tools to attach - this scope merely mounts directly using a standard Weaver mount and an adaptor that clips the scope in place. Plus you still have the use of your day scope.
When purchasing a night vision rifle scope you will need to decide what type you want. The passive type amplifies ambient light and the active type magnifies images on the scope. The active type uses batteries so this will be an accessory you will want to keep on hand. Choosing the type of night vision scope you need will depend on the purpose for which it will be used.
Many people use them for hunting the predators that stalk their farms. Coyotes are one that has caused many problems lately. According to who you talk to coyotes will eat anything from animals to children to attempting to take a bite out of an adult when given the chance. There are many farmers who do not waste time with these pesky animals. They do not want to lose their stock to the coyotes and they do not want their children being at risk when playing in their yard.
What are the Reasons for Purchasing a Night Vision Rifle Scope?
One of the many reasons that hunters purchase night vision scopes is to use them at night. The scopes you will be looking at when considering your purchase are varied.
Some of the types have different speed as well as generation. This has been discussed earlier so you should have a pretty good idea of what type of scope you need as far as this is concerned. The lens is another consideration. If you are going to be a far distance from your prey you will need a lens that is more powerful. The only problem with this is when you purchase a more powerful lens you will be trading the light for this option. So deciding which one of these options is more important is a decision only you can make.
Another consideration is how fast the animal you will be hunting can run. The prices of night vision scopes vary and the cheaper the price, the less the ability to get a good aim on anything that is moving at any speed. If you are going to use your scope for hunting animals that are speedy, you may want to spend the extra money on a rifle scope that is better for this purpose.
Although the law varies on what can be used for ridding farms of any type of predator as well as the predator itself, there are many farmers who do not want to take the risk, especially after finding a slaughtered animal on their property. The gun makers and the night vision scope manufacturers will answer the law of supply and demand.
